Horsham Rural City Council had initially planned to remove the trees after an arborist assessment found the trees to be in poor condition.
Chief Executive Sunil Bhalla said the council would work on seeing whether the issues with the trees could be fixed without having to remove them.
"Following our consultation with nearby residents and the wider community, we heard from multiple people who were opposed to the removal of the sugar gums," he said.
"As a result, council has decided not to proceed with the scheduled works."
EARLIER: The planned removal of 37 sugar gum trees along the north side of Natimuk Road has faced criticism from residents in the area.
In a two-week period from June 14, Horsham Rural City Council contractors will carry out the removal of the trees, which the council said pose a danger to vehicles and pedestrians in the area.
Natimuk Road resident Doug Cordell sent a letter to the council upon hearing the news, and called the plan "wanton environmental vandalism".
"I came to Horsham in 2009 and was immediately struck by the beauty of this tree-lined stretch of road. I purchased my property on the strength of this tree-lined avenue," he said.
"Apart from my personal dismay, take into account the shade these trees provide, the cooling effect the tree crowns provide, the bird habitat - of an evening, the bird population settling in for the night is an experience."
