The Regional Recovery fund provided $30,000 to the shire to develop plans and events alongside the region's tourism body and community groups.

West Wimmera Shire Council mayor Bruce Meyer said the July 15 Lexus Melbourne Cup tour visit to Kaniva was one of the funding benefactors, and the council was looking to replicate its success in other events.

"That went exceptionally well, it couldn't have gone any better, just a fantastic event and we have a number of others that are lined up yet and we hope they are going to be just as good," Cr Meyer said.

"The funding will be spread across the shire, with varying amounts of money and events of different sizes.

"The people from the Victorian Racing Club were just absolutely rapt with how it went, the organisation behind it, the displays. It just couldn't have gone any better.

"It was a big event, and when you get 150 odd people at the main event at night, working on percentages of the size of the town they have probably never seen anything like it."

The allocation is part of a $10 million investment from the Victorian Government to support regional businesses and communities.

Minister for Regional Development Mary-Anne Thomas said the Victorian Government had identified which areas of regional Victoria needed the most support following the impact of COVID-19.

"We've heard directly from local communities about how the past year has impacted them and that's why we are investing in projects which will boost jobs and improve the economy through our Regional Recovery Fund." she said.

Successful projects were identified based on their ability to provide an immediate economic response and assist with recovery efforts while also laying the groundwork for future growth.
