At a council meeting on Wednesday, Hindmarsh councillors voted in favour of the move, which looked to support community groups in the region facing financial hardships due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Council often charges a small amount of rent for the use of its buildings, and requires community groups to reimburse the council for the costs of building insurance based on an annual premium.
Hindmarsh Shire's total insurance premium for the 2021-22 year was $117,183.91, of which $26,000 was to be recouped in usage insurance payments.

The amount will be absorbed into the council's existing insurance bill.
Councillor Rob Gersch moved the motion at the meeting and said the decision showed the council's support for clubs in the area.
"It is always a bit of an issue with some of our smaller groups, the reason they come back to the council is because they can't pay their insurance," he said.
"I see this as great support for our community. If you look at football, hockey, netball, they have missed four home games, they have no income, and things like this could be a big burden on them.
"I think it is a great gesture from council here. My only comment would be we need to publicise the fact that council is certainly taking on board our community's struggles with COVID and we are in very big support of our community groups."
