The TAC and the Victorian government have said regional pubs and public venues not in lockdown will be popular over the weekend and urged football fans to be aware of the risks and to plan ahead if they plan to drink.

More than 150 Victorians were involved in serious crashes on Grand Final day in the past five years, including 11 deaths.

TAC head of Road Safety Samantha Cockfield said the take-home message was to exercise safe choices.

"Our message is to always make safe choices, like driving to the road conditions, sticking to the speed limit, and not drinking and driving - regardless of where you are heading or what the occasion is," she said.

"So, if you're lucky enough to be heading off somewhere this weekend, or socialising with current restrictions, please prioritise safety on the roads."

People wishing to watch the Grand Final and celebrate this weekend were encouraged to check the latest coronavirus restrictions in place on private gatherings, outdoor gatherings and hospitality across the state.
