The Yarriambiack Shire Council moved towards more community housing in Rupanyup with a land transfer recommendation during the September 29 council meeting.
Director of business strategy and performance Tammy Smith said the council will now consider a subplot of land on Gibson Street and engage in community consultation.
"There have been issues identified in relation to housing across the region and within our communities," she said.
"Some of the challenges include a minimal amount of suitable zone land for housing development, a shortage of housing for sale or rent, a shortage of affordable housing for downsizing, a shortage of domestic builders and a shortage of executive homes."
IN OTHER NEWS:
Rupanyup action group identified the land as suitable for housing development and requested the land transfer.
The council will use part of the land for executive housing, with a piece reserved for community housing.
Any financial gain from the development of the property by the Rupanyup Future Fund will be allocated for the community purpose.
Rupanyup Future Fund is a not-for-profit community organisation.
Council approved the commencement of community consultation.
A recommendation will be put forward for a vote after community feedback is gathered.
