Horsham's Hobbs and Friend make NAB League Teams of the Year

Ben Hobbs and Ella Friend, both GWV Rebels products, were selected for the U19 men's and women's teams respectively.

GWV Rebels talent head Damien Ross said the selections just reflected how much work they two put into their football.

Ross said that Hobbs' year, in what was a truncated season, showcased the former Horsham Demons' grit and determination.

"Ben's had an outstanding year, there's no doubt about that," Ross said of the tough midfielder.

"His two games with Vic Country really highlighted just how well he's going."

According to Ross, Hobbs' ability to overcome an injury will hold him in good stead going forward.

"Ben had a significant injury at the start of the year that could have really set him back, but his dedication and approach to his rehab helped him get back playing much sooner than everyone anticipated," he said.

"It just shows a lot about his character and how driven he is; he's a professional.

"He exhibits all of those right attributes you want to see from a potential AFL player."

Meanwhile Friend, a former Horsham Saint who was taken by St Kilda with pick 4 in the 2021 AFLW Draft in July, was selected at half-back in the NAB League's girls team of the year.

"Ella had an exceptional year, she's incredibly talented and she will thrive in the AFLW system," Ross said.

Ross said Friend was ready to jump out of the blocks in her first season with St Kilda.

"Ella's commitment over the last sort of four or five weeks in preparing herself for the preseason has been terrific," he said.
