"I believe that any mental health support for students is appreciated and will be used to its fullest," he said.

The $51.2 million Mental Health Practitioners initiative gives funding to schools to employ a practitioner mental health for up to five days a week.

Despite the rollout being finalised as year 12 students begin to tackle final year exams, Mr Koenig said it was still an important resource.

"It's absolutely not too late for year 12 students," he said.

The initiative was planned to be finalised this time next year, but has been rolled out a year ahead of its original date in a response to the COVID-19 pandemic and impact on students.

Member for Lowan and Shadow Minister for Mental Health Emma Kealy said the initiative is a good start.

"There simply isn't the mental health workforce to deliver the support services that our students so desperately need," she said.

"They are completely overburdened and they need to get more support, more workforce in as soon as possible to support them."

Ms Kealy said she wanted to see the government support the private members bill to see counselors recognised as mental health practitioners.

Ms Kealy also highlighted the need for support for right now.

"This isn't a problem that's going to go away overnight and it's not something that will change in the years to come," she said.

"We need to provide that early mental health support from today."
