The council was approached by members of the Nhill and District Historical Society to take the management of the building following a meeting with a Department of Environment, Water, Land and Planning representative.
The society were concerned about the future of the building, with the department indicating it did not have the necessary funds to undertake maintenance works on the building.
Hindmarsh Shire Council will now work with the department to become the Committee of Management of the parcel, which could take up to 18 months to finalise.

Hindmarsh Shire mayor Ron Ismay said the council was pleased to contribute to the maintenance of the historical building.
"There are not may buildings around Nhill of this age, and we need to preserve them for future generations," he said.
Nhill and District Historical Society secretary Kay Scott said she was "over the moon" with the news.
"Council's decision allows the Historical Society to have this wonderful building to house our ever growing collection, we can now look into the future and continue with displays and research," she said.
Following the Committee of Management being finalised, Council will enter into a user agreement with Nhill and District Historical Society to remain tenants of the building into the foreseeable future.
