The project was named a finalist in the water category of the 2021 Internet of Things (IoT) Awards. The awards program recognises that real-time data is increasingly important to Australian industry, government and citizens.
Internet of Things (IoT) communication technology was used across the GWMWater's urban towns to connect 29,000 communications-enabled, all-in-one water meters and 3000 retrofitted meters to a secure network. The water use data is then made available to customers through an online Customer Portal that can be accessed on computers, tablets and smart phones.
Managing Director Mark Williams said the technology was empowering customers to better understand their water use.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"Using this technology, GWMWater is empowering rural and urban customers with near real-time data in a Customer Portal so they can identify leaks, as well as adjust their water use and consumption patterns where required," he said.
"The technology has already enabled us to assist many customers in identifying issues beyond the water meter, saving water and reducing costs to customers."
The Customer Portal allows residential and commercial customers to see water usage at properties or points of service where there is a meter installed under one login. They can view their historical water use and any water use patterns, reduce unnecessary water use/expense, and set up automatic SMS message alerts to notify them of high usage or potential leaks.
Mr Williams said being shortlisted for the award was an honour, and served as recognition for the efforts of staff to make the Urban Customer Portal roll-out success.
"The team put in a lot of time and energy to ensure the customer experience was as seamless as possible and by all reports, with about 5000 unique users to date, it has paid off," he said.
"With more customers signing up every day, the team have already turned their attention to how we can make that user experience even richer."
The 2021 IoT Awards winners will be announced in an online ceremony on Tuesday, November 9.
