Youth Council has created video profiles on people in the community to show people breaking the mould regarding gender roles.
From November 25 through to December 10, Horsham Youth Council highlighted stories of people in non-traditional gender roles that live and work in the Horsham municipality.
The 16 Days of Activism is a global campaign to eliminate gender-based violence.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"Youth Council liked the idea of promoting familiar faces of our municipality," Youth Services Planning and Engagement Officer Louise Barnett said.
"The familiar faces were selected because they were someone's friend or someone's neighbour.
"That is the beauty of it; you can plant a seed of 'I can be a hairdresser or an Engineer in my town.'
"The 16 days of activism is so important because it shines a light on the inequalities, disrespect and violence that women are experiencing across the state, country and globe."
The Youth Council's spin on the project is crucial because it reduces rigid gender roles stereotypes.
It is shown that people who support rigid gender roles and stereotypes are more likely to approve and uphold attitudes that justify, excuse, minimise or trivialise violence against women.
"We are so thankful to all the participants that agreed to do their video for social media," she said.
"Being in front of the camera and being recorded can be really daunting, but all participants pushed past that and could see the importance of the project."
