Power outages, SES callouts after storm batters Wimmera

Emergency services braced for potential spot fires and tree damage caused by the storm as it made its way southward towards Melbourne.

In all, the SES received 14 calls for assistance across the Wimmera - mostly pertaining to fallen trees and building damage.

Ararat and Stawell had the highest amount of calls, with five each, followed by two calls from Horsham and others throughout smaller towns.

The CFA reported some activity, however, a spokesperson said the majority of fires were extinguished by rainfall before spreading.

"We did have quite a few, but a lot of them were non-events," the spokesperson said.

"For example, there were some incidents in Jung that started by lightning strikes, however, because they were followed quickly by rain they have put out themselves before crews needed to attend."

At about midday, a humid air mass brought thunderstorms to the region, supported by an upper trough, which supported thunderstorms into the evening.

A storm warning for damaging winds and heavy rainfall was issued to parts of West Wimmera, Warracknabeal and Horsham.

The storm activity has also caused power outages in towns across the region, including Langkoop, Edenhope, Minmay, Minyip and Rupanyup.
