Wimmera, Grampians residents warned of thunderstorm asthma risk on Wednesday

'Thunderstorm asthma can be dangerous.'

Asthma and hay fever sufferers are urged to take precautions with a moderate Thunderstorm Asthma warning issued for much of Victoria on Wednesday.

The warning extends across the Central, North Central, North East, South West, Wimmera, Northern Country, North East, South and West Gippsland regions as rain and storms continue across the state.

"If you have asthma and/or hay fever and experience sneezing, itchy, red or watery eyes, a runny or blocked nose or have any difficulty breathing, you may be at risk of thunderstorm asthma," Asthma Australia said in a statement.

"Thunderstorm asthma can be dangerous and can cause severe difficulty in breathing.

"Go inside and close your doors and windows and if you have your air conditioner on, turn it to re-circulate.

"Keep your reliever and hay fever medicine on hand or know how to access this medicine if your loved one has asthma or hay fever.

"Follow your written Asthma Action Plan."

It comes after Horsham received at 4.2 millimetres of rain at the Bureau of Meteorology's weather station at the Horsham Airport on Wednesday morning, with more rain reported in various parts across the region.

Most of the rain fell between 2am and 3am as a large storm front moved from west to east.

Stawell was hit with 32.4mm of rain with the bulk of the downpour coming between 1.30am and 4am.
