On Thursday, an 80 per cent chance of showers and possibly severe thunderstorms are forecast in southeast Wimmera, including Stawell, with a 40 per cent chance of showers elsewhere in the region.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Tom Delamotte said the rainfall was due to a tropical air mass extending over the state throughout Thursday and Friday.

"A trough is deepening over the state and drawing in some moisture from ex-tropical cyclone Seth off of the Queensland coast," he said.

"That is leading to these tropical and humid conditions and also giving us a risk of widespread showers and thunderstorms across the state in the next few days."

The bureau expects thunderstorms to continue across the state until Friday afternoon, returning to settled conditions on the weekend.

On Thursday, Horsham will see a shower or two with a top of 33 degrees, meanwhile, Stawell will experience showers, a possible thunderstorm, and a top of 29 degrees. Nhill, Edenhope and Warracknabeal will all see temperatures in the 30s.

A severe weather warning for damaging southeast to easterly winds has also been issued, impacting the exposed central coasts late Wednesday into Thursday.

Mr Delamotte said people should keep an eye on any warnings across the rest of the week.

"The key advice for the next few days is to keep up to date with the warnings and do keep an eye on the radar if you are out and about because thunderstorms can develop quickly," he said.

"The environment we are expecting over the next few days we could see severe thunderstorms develop quite quickly."
