Each year 10 per cent of the collection including outdated, rarely used, or irrelevant items.
Items purged from the library can be books, DVDs, audiobooks and magazines.
Yarriambiack Shire Director Community Development and Wellbeing Gavin Blinman said this is common practice for libraries.
IN OTHER NEWS:
There are currently 14,000 titles in the Yarriambiack libraries; about 1400 items will be removed each financial year.
These items will be offered to op shops and community-operated secondhand shops located in Yarriambiack shire.
These shops have been in communication with council officers about this proposed practice.
Items will be sold if op shops and secondhand shops don't want to take the removed items.
"Op shop's play an important role in the community by supplying goods at low cost, saving usable items from going to landfill and generating funds for their local community," Mr Blinman said.
This move aims to benefit the community through the donation and sale of old stock to reduce landfill.
The library's budget will replace 20 per cent of books each year.
Councillor Tom Hamilton recommended that book exchanges be included in the list of who will be offered the items, with book exchanges in Rupanyup and Murtoa.
"I'm fully in favour of the proposal," Cr Hamilton said.
